If you’ve noticed that your lips are looking a little thinner and you want to plump them up again, lip fillers are the answer.
As we age, a decrease in collagen production starts thinning the skin, which is why we start developing fine lines and wrinkles, age spots as well as thinner, flatter lips.
Lip fillers contain a substance called hyaluronic acid, which can be found naturally in the body. These types of fillers are temporary but are much safer and one of the best ways to plump up your lips.
Why consultations matter
If you don’t want to end up with fake or plastic-looking lips, it’s important to choose a cosmetic doctor who has the relevant qualifications and experience.
It’s during your consultation that you will be able to discuss the details that will help you determine whether a doctor is the right fit. You will also be able to explain to your doctor how you would like to look so that they can tell you what’s realistic or not. A reputable doctor will take the shape of your face and your other facial features into consideration before deciding on the amount of filler to be used.
Realistic expectations are a must going into your consultation as your doctor will always put your safety and wellbeing ahead of your aesthetic goals. Too much lip filler or receiving fillers too often can be incredibly dangerous and isn’t recommended.
What to expect during your treatment
A lip enhancement procedure approved by MIRA Clinic can either be administered with or without an anaesthetic.
Before the fillers are injected, a local anaesthetic can be used to numb the mouth. However, if anaesthetic isn’t used, patients can expect minimal discomfort during the procedure as most fillers contain lidocaine. If anaesthetic is preferred, laughing gas or a topical numbing cream can be used.
Fillers can be administered in 10 minutes and you can return to your normal daily activities after your procedure, however, some patients will choose to stay away from work for a day or two to allow any swelling to subside.
It’s also best to not engage in any vigorous physical activity directly after your treatment to prevent the filler from shifting.
If for any reason you are not happy with the results of your lip fillers, the filler can be dissolved using a dissolving enzyme that interacts with the hyaluronic acid.
Your doctor will also provide you with some aftercare instructions that will help you enjoy your results for as long as possible. Most women can enjoy fuller lips for up to 6 months.
Caring for your lips
Following your lip filler treatment, it’s really important to keep your lips hydrated, nourished and protected. There are a number of hydrating lip treatments and products that can be used to enhance the results of your lip fillers and ensure that they’re cared for before your top-up treatment is required. Speak to your dermatologist or doctor about the products or treatments that they recommend.
